The Minister of Communications and Information Technology Amr Talaat has participated in the official launch of the AI Hub for Sustainable Development, established within the framework of the Italian G7 Presidency for 2024.
The event took place at the headquarters of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Rome, Italy, and was attended by the Italian Minister of Enterprises and Made in Italy Adolfo Urso, alongside several ministers and government officials from African nations, representatives of international organizations, and officials from global and African tech companies.
The ICT Minister’s participation in the launch event came in response to an invitation extended by the Italian Minister of Enterprises and Made in Italy.
The Hub has been launched through a close partnership between Italy and UNDP, in collaboration with the European Union (EU). It aims to drive digital transformation and accelerate AI-enabled industrial development across Africa, in line with the African Union’s (AU) Continental Artificial Intelligence (AI) Strategy. 14 partner countries in Africa, including Egypt, have been selected to initiate collaboration.
The Hub’s goals include significantly expanding access to computing resources for AI innovators across Africa and developing sustainable AI infrastructure in priority countries. Additional objectives involve fostering partnerships between African ventures and Italian companies from the G7, advancing AI applications to address critical development challenges, and boosting investment flows into the African AI ecosystem.
The launch event was also attended by Head of the Applied Innovation Center (AIC) Ahmed Tantawy, who was selected to represent Egypt as a member of the Hub’s executive steering group. He also took part in the conference organized to exchange insights on the Hub and explore strategies for achieving its future goals.
